IN A JAPANESE GARDEN
Over the past ten years I have developed my ongoing series entitled, In a Japanese Garden, consisting of paintings and mixed media artworks of kimonos, flowers, and garden settings—inspired by the sensibilities of Japanese culture and art.
Several years ago, while visiting the de Young Museum in San Francisco, I was awed by the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Japanese kimonos in the Museum's collection. The word "kimono" means something to wear. Using the kimono shape as a compositional structure, this work explores and fuses my idea of beauty, informed by diverse cultural aesthetics and humankind's artistry as inspiration for my own image making.
